Anti-Aging and Common Treatments

The aging process is unavoidable, but it doesn’t mean that you suddenly have to start looking at your age. There are cosmetic treatments that can address the signs of aging and mask them, particularly those that affect the skin on your face. Botox® and Juvéderm® are two of the most popular types of injectable anti-aging treatments on the market and can take years off of your appearance.

Botox® is a very well known and popular cosmetic anti-aging treatment. It is known as an injectable as this is the method with which it is administered. Botox® takes its name from the main ingredient used within it – Botulinum toxin – which is a neurotoxin that has been approved for use in anti-aging treatment. Neurotoxins work by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause persistent lines and wrinkles in the overlying skin when they contract. They do this by blocking the signals sent from the central nervous system to the muscles. Instead, they remain to relax and the overlying skin is smooth and flat. This makes it much harder for lines and wrinkles to form.

Botox® is usually administered into the top half of the face, addressing the lines that form between the eyebrows, across the forehead, and around the eyes. However, more recently it has also started to be injected into the muscle that runs across the top line, in a procedure known as a ‘Botox® lip flip’. Administering it here causes the top lip to flip upwards, making it appear fuller.

Botox® is minimally invasive with a low risk of complications. The needle used to inject it is so fine that most patients don’t require anesthetic, although topical anesthetic may be administered if desired. There’s no downtime and the results are visible immediately. However, the effects are only temporary, lasting between 4 and 6 months before further treatment is required to maintain your results.

Juvéderm® is a leading brand of facial filler. Facial fillers, which are also known as dermal fillers, are injectable gels that are used to add volume to the face. The primary ingredient in Juvéderm® is hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance, but our natural production of it slows with aging. HA binds to water in your skin, making the area appear fuller as well as rehydrating it. This added volume causes the skin to become taught, and as such, fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed so that their appearance is diminished. Rehydrating older skin also improves the tone, color, and texture of it, causing it to look refreshed, rejuvenated, and more youthful than before.

There are various types of Juvéderm® filler, each of which is designed for a particular purpose. Some of the cosmetic improvements that Juvéderm® can make include:

-       Softening lines and folds to reduce their appearance

-       Restoring the fullness of your cheeks

-       Contouring your chin and jawline

-       Adding volume to the lips to make them look fuller and more defined

-       Restoring volume around your eyes so that they look less sunken and any lines and wrinkles are diminished

Like most dermal fillers, Juvéderm® is predominantly administered in the lower half of the face. And just like other injectables, the procedure is minimally invasive with a low risk of complications. The results are fairly instantaneous too, with changes being visible within a few hours of treatment. The results can be sustained for up to a year, after which further treatment will be needed to maintain your new appearance.
